It is with sadness that we announce that Gontug Rinpoche passed away in Uganda on 21 August 2025. Venerable had been undertaking missionary work in Africa when he contracted malaria which ultimately resulted in his demise.
Gontug Rinpoche was active member of the Australian Buddhist community and worked strongly to promote the Dhamma. He was a committee member of the Australian Sangha Association (2015-15 and 2015-16) and treasurer for the BCV (2016-17 and 2017-18) as well as a volunteer in the Buddhist Education in Victorian Schools program run by BCV (2015 until the program was ceased in Covid).
Gontug Rinpoche spent three years in Nepal during the Covid period. He was resident at Wat Thai Melbourne for a little over a year when he returned to Australia before again travelling overseas.
A one hundred memorial service will be held at Wat Thai on the evening of 29 November 2025. Details of this event will be announced closer to the date.
